Six members of the Mupu 4-H Club spent Saturday morning cleaning up the beach at Oil Piers in Ventura.  The team collected over 150 pounds of trash and documented the items on tally sheets.  Members were; Roberto Lopez, Jorge Lopez, Sarah Alamillo, Lauren Alamillo, Gabriel Lemus, and Denise Mondragon.  Roberto and Jorge each raised a pig, and Sarah, Lauren and Gabriel each raised a lamb for the Ventura County Fair this year.

Gabriel commented on his first time to do the Coastal Clean-Up , “We found lots of crazy stuff, even used underwear.  I saw a bunch of whales behind a fishing boat.  My favorite part was when we found a football and we got to play catch when we were done.”  Denise and Sarah, both veterans from Coastal Clean-Ups from previous years, slid down the rocks to check out a cool metal box hidden in the rocks.  Denise said, “We opened it and it was a geo cache box.  We put a note in it and put it back for someone else to find.”  By the end of the morning, Roberto thought the walk back to the car was long and burning hot.  Some of the odd items collected were a traffic pylon, a bar-be-cue grill, new PVC pipe, lighters, socks, dirty diapers, and spray paint cans.  Cigarette butts were the #1 item found during the clean-up.

After the clean-up the whole team including Mupu 4-H Club leader Carole Butler, Amber Clendening, and Sylvia Lemus took the kids to Joe’s Crab Shack for lunch and a chance to relax and visit.
