Close to 100 classified employees of the Santa Paula Unified School District protested outside Glen City School prior to Wednesday’s school board meeting.

The employees are members of the California School Employees Association (CSEA). They claim that the district is proposing making cafeteria workers teachers’ aides, custodians and others pay up to $250 per month in out-of-pocket costs for health coverage. They say that this is much more than any other employees in the district (teachers and administrators) are paying for the same coverage.

The district’s response was a fact sheet put out by Superintendent Alfonso Gamino. He said all CSEA employees would receive a minimum salary increase of 1.5% retroactive to October2013. He added that nearly half of the workers would receive an increase of at least 4%. “All eligible unit members will pay less for fringe benefits than they would have under the contracts in the old districts (Santa Paula Elementary and Santa Paula Union High School District),” he said. “The district believes that its proposals are fair and appropriate and looks forward to a prompt resolution to the negotiations.”

Sue Carpenter, President of the CSEA Santa Paula Unified Chapter 891 said, “The district says that they are treating us fairly but how can that be when they are asking us to pay twice as much for our health benefits as the teachers are paying. They are refusing to negotiate with us. We want to send the message to the district that we only want to be treated like everyone else.”
