By Brian D. Wilson Santa Paula Times Several Santa Paula area schools recently celebrated the birthday of Dr. Seuss.

March 2 was the 110th birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel (Dr. Seuss). Geisel published 46 children’s books over his lifetime. They included the bestselling Green Eggs and Ham, The Cat in the Hat, Horton Hatches the Egg and How the Grinch Stole Christmas. He died in 1991.

His works were adapted for 11 television specials, a Broadway musical, four feature films and four television series. He won the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award in 1958 for Horton Hatches the Egg and again in 1961 for And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street.

Over his career Geisel worked as an illustrator, a political cartoonist and, in World War II he worked in an animation department

Barbara Webster, Glen City, McKevett, Olivelands and Bedell schools each had guest readers, reading from Dr. Seuss books to kindergartners and 1st graders. Blanchard School had a door decorating contest in honor of Read Across America, an initiative on reading created by the National Education Association. One part of the project is National Read Across America Day, an observance in the United States held on the school day closest to the birthday of Dr. Seuss.

The Cat in the Hat visited Glen City Elementary School on Tuesday for Read Across America.  The Cat read a Dr. Seuss book to kindergarten and 1st graders.  That crazy cat mesmerized the students!  The Glen City PTA purchased books for each student to have and read at school or at home.  There are now 650 students with fun and interesting books to read

Two Santa Paula Police officers read to a kindergarten class last Friday at Olivelands School.

The Blanchard School door decorating contest winners were: Lower grade: 2nd grade teacher Michael Fickes, Room 13 and Upper grade: 3rd grade teacher Magda Escalante, Room 18.
