Santa Paula High School
Santa Paula High School’s Agriculture Science Academy students experienced the “learn by doing philosophy at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. For 21 years, Cal Poly’s College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences has been hosting the 2-day college event in order for students to develop an interest in agriculture as well as think about their future after high school. According to Dr. Flores, Department Head of the Agriculture Education & Communications Department at Cal Poly “the program known as 26 Hours of Science and Technology in Agriculture is designed to provide participants several application-oriented workshops focused on opportunities in agriculture. Cal Poly strongly believes in the learn-by-doing philosophy. There are a number of professional careers awaiting graduates with degrees in agriculture. The participants in this program can be a part of the future of the industry. When students come to Cal Poly, some have never realized there is a significant opportunity and a need for people to go into agriculture.”The program would not be possible if it wasn’t for the support of the College of Agriculture, Dr. David Wehner, Dean of the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences, the Agriculture Education Department, Cal Poly Professors, Staff, Clubs, and most importantly Cal Poly students. Students attended workshops in the areas of Horticulture, Agriculture Engineering, Animal Science, Dairy Science, Soil Science, Food Science & Nutrition, Floriculture, Chemistry, and Agriculture Communications.
