By Peggy Kelly Santa Paula TimesA female juvenile driver exited Highway 126 at Peck Road on Tuesday and kept on going, ultimately damaging several cars parked at Kmart across Faulkner Road, and injuring herself and a passenger. The driver, a 17-year-old resident of Fillmore, was not licensed, according to a Santa Paula Police spokesman.Senior Officer Ken Clark said the incident occurred October 14 at about 11:44 p.m., when the unidentified westbound driver exited Highway 126 onto Peck Road in a 1998 Nissan Pathfinder. “She did not stop at the sign there and continued” through Faulkner Road and into the Kmart parking lot, where her vehicle “struck one parked car and it was pushed into another parked car.” A portion of the Kmart parking lot adjacent to Faulkner Road is used for commuter parking.Clark said the driver was injured, but “Most of her injuries were related to the airbag deploying, nothing serious, but bruising and facial injuries. Her front right passenger was also injured because of the airbag deploying as well.”Santa Paula Fire EMTs and ambulance paramedics treated the driver and her passenger - 44-year-old Maria Alvarez of Fillmore - on scene before they were transported, respectively, to Ventura County Medical Center and Santa Paula Hospital. A male and female riding in the backseat, both unidentified minors and residents of Fillmore, were not injured.
The blue 1997 GMC pickup truck struck by the Nissan sustained moderate damage. The black 2007 Chevrolet pickup truck the GMC was pushed into had minor damage. The Nissan, noted Clark, “had major front end damage.”The accident is still under investigation, but there were no skid marks to demonstrate the unidentified juvenile driver had applied the brakes, and a passenger told investigators the driver “was going fast” as she exited the highway. Although just how fast the driver was traveling cannot be determined, “The impact,” noted Clark, “was pretty hard... and the driver was unlicensed so she’ll probably be issued a citation for that.”
