By Peggy Kelly Santa Paula TimesHundreds of people showed they take their health and well being seriously at the 1st Annual Santa Paula Adult Health & Wellness Day, held Sunday at the Community Center.Sponsored by Santa Paula Hospital, the City of Santa Paula, State Farm Insurance/Jim Tovias and The Gables of Ojai, the event offered information on health issues, free flu shots, resources for home support, and health screenings, as well as snacks and musical entertainment. Heart healthy popcorn was offered to visitors as they entered the Community Center, where the Commission on Aging and The Medicine Shop were among the displays.“There’s been lines out the door” for free flu shots, sponsored by State Farm Insurance/Jim Tovias, “and a lot of nice vendors giving away things,” said Landa Rushing, who later won a coveted gift basket. Rushing was helping with the Santa Paula Commission on Aging display that offered free hand cream and tissues to visitors.Inside the center there were a variety of displays, including the Ventura County Regional Energy Alliance, Dr. Paul Reyes DDS, and the Santa Clara Hospice/Home Support Group and River Valley Club Adult Day program. “Isn’t this nice?” asked Rose Luna of the River Valley Club. “We’ve sure had a lot of people go by,” including those who stopped to view the Power Point of club services and activities.
The Alzheimer’s Association, CURVES, Ventura Behavioral Health and Santa Paula Senior Center were also among the more than two-dozen participants, as was Ventura County Veterans Services (VCVS). The new Veterans Home in Saticoy is “about 60 percent complete,” said VCVS Administrator Colonel George Compton, and completion of the facility is expected early next year.“Probably in April or May we’ll put the first vet into the home,” said Compton. “We’ll start with 60 beds, and in about year” the facility will be able to serve an additional 50 veterans with day program services.“The turnout today has been excellent,” said Santa Paula Hospital COO Christina Thielst. “The vendors are doing an extraordinary job of sharing information,” and by 2:30 p.m. about 150 people had received free flu shots. The timing of the event was just right for Olivia Escoto, who noted, “I get my flu shot every October.”
