By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesIncumbent 3rd District County Supervisor Kathy Long will be squaring off against challenger Socorro Lopez-Hanson Monday night in a Santa Paula-based forum staged by the Santa Paula/Ventura County League of Women Voters. The forum will be held at the Santa Paula Community Center, 530 W. Main St., starting at 7 p.m.The low-key race between Long and Lopez-Hanson will end June 3 when voters decide if they want to retain the three-term incumbent or elect another person to the Board of Supervisors. If Long receives more than 50 percent of the vote it will cinch her fourth term in office.Moderator David Maron will offer information on each candidate before inviting them to present brief opening statements. Questions for the candidates culled from League members will be followed by written questions from the audience.
Long and Lopez-Hanson, both Camarillo residents, have run low-profile campaigns with the exception of Lopez-Hanson having to go to court regarding her voter’s guide candidate statement, which was rejected as too personal by the County Election’s Division. The statement was rewritten by Lopez-Hanson, the executive director of the nonprofit Community Action of Ventura County and an Oxnard Union High School District trustee.Long, who with members of the Santa Paula City Council fought to reopen Santa Paula Hospital, has racked up endorsements from throughout the county including Camarillo City Councilman Mike Morgan, who unsuccessfully challenged Long on several occasions.Socorro-Lopez is running on a platform of change, and vows to make public safety a priority, provide strong fiscal oversight and focus on developing affordable housing, among other issues. She was a founding member of the Santa Paula Health Action Coalition, which led to the creation of the Santa Paula Family Resource Center.Long believes that her accomplishments as a supervisor reflect her experience and commitment to her constituents and her continued efforts to oversee the county’s fiscal stability, protecting priorities that keep communities safe, healthy and economically viable.
