New Summer Program for Youth to Focus on Fisheries Journalism

A free, two-week summer program for Ventura County middle and high school students will be held July 9-20, 2007.

A free, two-week summer program for Ventura County middle and high school students will be held July 9-20, 2007. The application deadline is June 28 and space is limited.The goal of the “Fisheries Journalism Academy” is to improve fisheries and ocean literacy and stewardship among participants, as well as others who will receive the educational materials produced by the students. Participants must arrange their own transportation to and from the meeting location. Participants must be available to attend the entire two weeks of the program. Snacks and lunch will be provided.Fisheries Journalism Academy activities include:* Guest speakers and discussions with fishery participants, managers and researchers* Visits to local harbors and fishing boats* Trips to local seafood processing facilities, retail markets and restaurants* Tours of local fishery enhancement facilities and marine research/education facilities
* Tour of Star Newspaper and discussions with local journalists* Research, writing, artwork development (fish printing) and more!The program will highlight the commercial fishery resources of the Santa Barbara Channel, their management, and the importance to Ventura County. Students will learn about local fisheries resources, fishing activities and associated harbor infrastructure, seafood nutrition, resource monitoring and management, resource sustainability and stewardship. Students will also be exposed to marine science career and educational opportunities. The Fisheries Academy is being modeled after the 4-H and agricultural advisor’s successful agricultural academy youth program that resulted in the “Fields to Fridge: What’s Growing in Ventura County” supplemental newspaper (for more information on that program visit http://ucanr.org/delivers/impactview. dfm?impactnum=612)This program is a collaborative effort between the California Sea Grant Extension Program and 4-H Youth Program, University of California Cooperative Extension, Ventura County. The Academy will be lead by Carolynn (Carrie) Culver, Ph.D., Marine Advisor for Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties.
