The Chamber of Commerce honored Santa Paula High School teacher and coach Brian Blevins as Educator of the Month at the March Good Morning Santa Paula breakfast meeting.

The Chamber-sponsored gathering was held at the Glen Tavern Inn.

SPHS Principal Elisabeth Garcia said Blevins has been with at the “Campus on the Hill” for five years. “Brian is an excellent teacher who teaches social sciences and is the varsity boys’ soccer coach... and this year the team went all the way to the quarter finals. He did a wonderful job” not only leading the team to championship finals, but also with classroom students.

“Students love Brian... he’s not only a wonderful teacher and inspiration,” but Garcia said Blevins also leads the Link Crew, upper classmen who mentor freshmen students just entering high school. “The Link Crew has a big orientation in the summertime, about four hours long held in the gymnasium, where he trains the higher grade students to mentor freshmen” who often find transitioning from middle school to high school challenging. Link Crew mentors stay with the freshmen throughout their first year of school, offering advice and direction.

Said Garcia, “We want to thank him for all the wonderful things he does for Santa Paula High School” and its students, as “It wouldn’t be the same without him.”

“It’s an honor to be a part of the Santa Paula community and the high school,” said Blevins. “I appreciate the award just because I’m a teacher, but I do it for the kids; it’s a pleasure to be around them and teach them to learn... it’s fun.”

Good Morning Santa Paula Moderator Ben Schuck noted, “If you make learning fun they will learn... we hope you display this plaque in your classroom so your students will recognize what you do everyday for them, make them think about what’s important to learn and become valuable citizens.”

Blevins also received a Certificate of Recognition from a representative of Assemblyman Jeff Gorell.
