Busy seismic weekend in Ventura County with trio of micro to small earthquakes

On the heels of Thursday’s California Great Shake Out statewide earthquake drill, it remained a busy weekend for earth movement in Ventura County with three micro to small earthquakes, including one on or near the Oak Ridge Fault near Santa Paula.

By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesOn the heels of Thursday’s California Great Shake Out statewide earthquake drill, it remained a busy weekend for earth movement in Ventura County with three micro to small earthquakes, including one on or near the Oak Ridge Fault near Santa Paula.The first earthquake, the largest of the trio, struck Friday, October 16 at 9:53 p.m. The 3.2 magnitude quake was centered four miles east-southeast of the City of Oxnard and four miles east of Port Hueneme.
Some people reportedly did feel the earthquake, but there were no reports of damage or injuries. The coordinates of the event were 34 deg. 10.3 min. N (34.172N), 119 deg. 7.2 min. W (119.120W), and its depth was a scant 0.9 miles.On Saturday, October 17, a 2.4 magnitude micro-earthquake occurred at 8:14 p.m. centered 15 miles north-northeast of Santa Paula and 10 miles north of Fillmore. The quake’s coordinates were 34 deg. 32.5 min. N (34.542N), 118 deg. 56.4 min. W (118.940W), and its depth was recorded at 9.4 miles.Although the Friday and Saturday quakes were not recorded near or on active fault lines, Sunday saw the Oak Ridge Fault make a weak seismic statement with the smallest event of the weekend when a magnitude 2.0 micro-earthquake occurred at 4:42 p.m. October 18. The micro-shaker registered five miles east-northeast of Santa Paula and four miles west-southwest of Fillmore. Coordinates of the event were 34 deg. 22.5 min. N (34.376N), 118 deg. 59.4 min. W (118.990W), and the depth of micro-earthquake was recorded at 17.5 miles.
