The Santa Paula Elementary School District’s annual Young Writers’ Creative Writing Contest culminated this year Tuesday evening, May 20, at the Isbell School Cafeteria with awards being presented to 89 winners. This was the 28th year of the Contest that has the District’s students in grades 1-8 competing by grade level in 2 categories; short story and poetry.Brenda deJamaer, the Contest’s coordinator, presented the awards and said she was thrilled with the quality of writing and creativity from the students’ entries this year. The students wrote about friends, school life, family, animals, feelings, space and war. Many genres were covered this year in the short story category; there were mysteries, fantasy, science fiction, and historical fiction. Mrs. deJamaer said that judging this year had to be a difficult task. A big “THANK YOU” goes out to the 12 judges this year that stepped up and gave of their time and expertise. The judges were Julia Copeland, Jeri Mead, Leslie Borchard, and Patty Jones from the school district; Connie Bennett, Rosann Mears, Chris Buchanan, and Phyllis Dorsey who are retirees from the school district; from the Blanchard Community Library, Dan Robles, Ilene Gavenman, and Bev Mueller; and Suzi Skutley from the Santa Paula Times. The award presentations were accompanied by soft, pleasant melodies provided by Ms. Donna Nelson on the piano. Refreshments of cake and punch were provided and served by the Santa Paula Federation of Teachers for the winners and their families at the end of the awards ceremony.
