UU Church concert series continues

Musical Director Mariana Franco-Sommer has announced the next offering in the Santa Paula Concert Series at the Universalist Unitarian Church of Santa Paula. On Sunday, September 30 at 4 p.m., Mary Rawcliffe, soprano, and Stuart Fox on Renaissance lute and guitar will perform Elizabethan love songs, songs by John Duarte, and Spanish song settings by Federico Garcia Lorca. A versatile performer on the concert stage, soprano Mary Rawcliffe has earned critical acclaim singing music of all periods, from the 12th-century chant of Hildegard of Bingen to John Adams’ 1987 opera Nixon in China, and most recently to songs of Noel Coward and Cole Porter. She has presented numerous song recitals and has sung with many American orchestras, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, and the Denver, Utah and Phoenix Symphonies.Stuart Fox has been director of the CalArts Guitar Program since 1973, and is a member of the CalArts New Century Players. He has performed and recorded extensively with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and Southwest Chamber Music.The Unicorn Recorder Consort and friends will also appear, performing pieces from the Renaissance to the 20th century. Under the musical direction of Mariana Franco-Sommer, players Bruce Walker, Teresa Dye, Reed Smith and Ollie Powers will perform Renaissance, Baroque and contemporary music by John Dowland, Johann Pezell, William Brade and Nancy Bloomer Deussen.
