District Attorney Gregory Totten has announced the retirement of Chief Investigator Gary Auer.

District Attorney Gregory Totten has announced the retirement of Chief Investigator Gary Auer. Chief Investigator Auer has provided eight years of exemplary service to the District Attorney’s Office and many more than that to the citizens of Ventura County.Prior to joining the District Attorney’s Office in 1999, Auer served 27 years with the FBI, the last 12 of which were spent as the supervisor of the FBI’s Ventura office. While serving as the District Attorney’s Chief Investigator, Auer brought marvelous insight and innovation to the District Attorney’s Bureau of Investigation. Under his leadership, the Bureau expanded into areas not traditionally handled by district attorney’s offices. His contributions and innovations will long serve this office, local law enforcement, and our community.
Deputy Chief Investigator Rob Briner has been appointed to replace Auer as Chief Investigator. Briner has worked in law enforcement for more than 26 years and has spent the last 17 years with the District Attorney’s Office.During his tenure with the District Attorney’s Bureau of Investigation, Briner has served in the Sexual Assault/Family Protection Unit, the Political Corruption Unit, the Criminal Intelligence/Special Investigations Unit, and has served in and supervised the Major Crimes Unit and the Welfare Fraud Unit. Briner was appointed to the position of Senior District Attorney Investigator in 1999, and was promoted to Deputy Chief Investigator in 2006.
