By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesThe registered owner of the 1998 Honda that killed a Camarillo art teacher on Telegraph Road outside city limits turned himself in to Santa Paula Police on Monday, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Steve Reid.CHP officers took Richard Buenrostro, 36 of Santa Paula into custody shortly after he went to the SPPD station and told officers that he was the owner of the car involved in the crash.Buenrostro owns the 1998 metallic-green Honda Accord discovered in an orchard near the intersection of Santa Paula Street and Peck Road early Thursday, Aug. 5, about 24 hours after the 8:15 a.m. accident that killed Darlene Bryant, 55 of Ventura.Bryant died shortly after she and her companion, Lennis Dearing, 68 also of Ventura, were struck from behind while bicycling eastbound in the clearly marked bike lane. Dearing received minor injuries and was treated and released from Community Memorial Hospital that same day.Bryant was an advanced placement art teacher at Camarillo High School and the art department chairwoman.
CHP investigators found the right mirror assembly of the Honda at the crash scene.Since Buenrostro is the registered owner of the car he was considered the prime suspect and the CHP has “uncovered some good evidence,” that Buenrostro was driving the Honda at the time of the crash. At this point, CHP investigators are not releasing much information about the fatal hit-and-run including details about Buenrostro or his whereabouts between the time of the accident and when he turned himself in or when investigators believe that the car was abandoned. As the incident is still under investigation, not too many details are being released, said CHP Officer Reid.Buenrostro faces vehicular manslaughter and felony hit-and-run charges. He was booked into Ventura County Jail on Monday and released Tuesday afternoon after posting $50,000 bail.
