Backstage at SPTC (Santa Paula Theater Center) announces open auditions for five short one-act productions collectively known in 2010 as “Acts2Grind.”

All roles are open.

Auditions will be held Monday and Tuesday, August 16 and 17, at 7 p.m. at the Santa Paula Theater Center, 125 S. 7th St., with callbacks to be decided later. Auditions will consist of readings from the scripts, which may be found online at www.santapaulatheatercenter.org and will also be available at auditions. No appointment necessary, and no need to bring a photograph. If after reviewing the website you have further questions, please call one of the producers, John McKinley, at (805) 708-6469.

The one-act plays will run three consecutive weekends, beginning Friday, October 15 and closing Saturday, October 30. There will be 10 performances total, with two special Thursday performances on October 21 and 28. Rehearsals will commence approximately September 1.

The Stories:

“Once a Week at Best” (2 M, 2F): Sara and Carl have been getting together for their weekly “no strings attached” trysts for quite a while. Recent events, however, have caused Sara to rethink things, and she now puts Carl to the test.

“Burnt” (2 M): Jonah unexpectedly visits his estranged father, and a childhood tree house becomes the foreground for Jonah’s need to find a meaningful relationship. This drama explores how to let go and when to hold on.

“Fifty Ways” (1 M, 1 F): A suicidal man, depressed over a breakup, has his plans interrupted when an intriguing woman takes sanctuary in his apartment to escape a creepy stalker. (There’s a chance the actors in this production will also appear in “Once a Week at Best.”)

“Hotel Ménage” (3 M, 2 F): Three strangers find themselves having to share a room in a new-age hotel with unconventional policies and a very stubborn and comedic clerk.

“Happy Birthday, Martha” (1 M, 1 F): Martha, a wealthy and controlling matriarch, suddenly finds herself at the mercy of her beleaguered husband Arthur, a put upon, somewhat timid man who has concocted a rather unsettling surprise for his wife on the occasion of her birthday.
