The community will celebrate Thanksgiving and show the true spirit of the holiday by donating the offering of an interfaith service to Many Meals, which each week feeds hundreds of hungry Santa Paulans.

Sponsored by the Santa Paula Ministerial Association, the annual Community Thanksgiving Service will be held Monday, November 23 at First United Methodist Church (at the corner of North Mill and Santa Barbara streets) starting at 7 p.m. According to Pastor Ron Dybvig of St. Paul’s Episcopal/Emmanuel Lutheran Church, “A pie potluck will follow the service” for all to enjoy.

Although Dybvig said he’s not sure when the Thanksgiving interfaith service began, the original celebration included dinner for senior citizens. As those attending aged, “They started a dinner delivery” and about six or seven years ago the event was again changed to the pie potluck.

Pastor Dybvig said the program is “basically many pastors giving prayers,” readings of the Bible and offering poems. Xavier “Big X” Montes and Conjunto Callejon, a group of musically talented musicians mentored by the acclaimed artist and harpist, will be featured performers.

“We thought it would be fun,” noted Dybvig, for those attending the Community Thanksgiving Service “to hear the kids.... We have the pie potluck following; it’s good fellowship, a good way to get the community together and give thanks.”

And enjoy the pie: “Oh, we have quite a few varieties of pie,” all promised to be, said Pastor Dybvig, “delicious.”
