Construction worker suffers severe back injury in fall

A 30-year-old Santa Paula man received severe back injury after he fell at an area construction site according to a Santa Paula Fire spokesman.

By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesA 30-year-old Santa Paula man received severe back injury after he fell at an area construction site according to a Santa Paula Fire spokesman.Assistant Chief Kevin Fildes said the accident occurred Monday, March 30 in the 500 block of West Main Street.At about 9:30 a.m. Leo Garcia, 30, of Santa Paula, was working on a “Remodel of a house, was stripping the siding from the second floor,” when he stepped inside a cutting for a new stair system.“There was no railing,” and Asst. Chief Fildes said Garcia fell approximately 15-feet, “landing on and injuring his back ... “
Garcia was “Conscious, just a little disorientated” when emergency personnel arrived on the scene.Santa Paula Fire EMTs from Engines 81 and Engine 82 both responded “Because of the construction site, open ditches, pipes, we needed extra manpower” to offer emergency aid to Garcia as well as to assist AMR Ambulance paramedics in loading Garcia on the ambulance.Garcia was transported to Ventura County Medical Center.Asst. Chief Fildes said the department was notified Monday that Garcia suffered a “very severe injury to his back” as a result of the fall, an incident that was “truly unfortunate and very preventable ... “The state Occupational Safety & Health Agency (OSHA) was notified and is investigating the accident.
