Hillview Estates arson, mini-bike theft suspect arrested

Santa Paula Police have announced the arrest of a suspect who allegedly started a destructive Dec. 3, 2008 fire at Hillview Estates just hours after stealing a mini-bike from the residence.

SPPD Det. Dan Kiernan said the unidentified 17-year-old male juvenile was arrested Dec. 31.The Dec. 3 fire - reported at 11:30 p.m. - destroyed a storage shed adjacent to the residence...although the structure was saved the home sustained major smoke and water damage to the contents.A neighbor banging on the door woke up the couple occupying the residence, located at 975 W. Telegraph Road, Space #1 and they were able to escape without injury. Initial estimates of damage were $30,000 to the structure and approximately $100,000 in contents. A small motorcycle had been reported stolen from the residence earlier that same day.Det. Kiernan said the investigation “Led to the development of a suspect in both the vehicle theft and the arson...subsequently, the suspect was identified by a motorist who was passing at the time,” of the latter incident.The suspect, who Det. Kiernan said has a “Minor criminal history including theft and burglary,” and who lives about a block away from Hillview Estates, was arrested without incident.
“During an extensive interview with the suspect he admitted to stealing the motorcycle earlier that day and returning later to commit further theft,” and, noted Det. Kiernan, “to retrieve a backpack he had left during the earlier theft in the victim’s backyard.”The suspect’s admission to starting the fire, Det. Kiernan added, is still under investigation as to the exact circumstances.The suspect was arrested for arson, burglary and auto theft and he was transported to Ventura County Juvenile Hall.According to Det. Kiernan “It is unknown at this time whether or not he will be tried as an adult” based - among other factors - on his criminal history.The witness who saw the suspect offered solid assistance “As well as the development of other evidence and leads...the suspect did not know the victims, this was random.”And, Det. Kiernan added that, “During the interview it was learned that the subject expressed a desire in becoming a fireman...”
