By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesSeptember is Disaster Preparedness Month, and the Santa Paula Fire Department has taken to the city’s government access cable station to present a series of programming that will run all month long. Time Warner Cable Channel 10 is the place to be to educate your child about safety and self-esteem issues, while separate programming is targeting adults who must learn how to be prepared in the event of disaster or emergency.“Rainbow Fire Department” is a series of 30-minute children’s videos on safety that also offers life lessons from a cast of lovable 3-D animation characters that children 2 to 6 years of age will not only particularly enjoy, but also learn from. “People Like You,” featuring Santa Paula Fire Captain and Emergency Preparedness Coordinator Steve Lazenby and produced by the Rotary Ojai-West Club, targets subjects taught for the Citizens Emergency Response Team (CERT). The third program, “The Plan,” focuses more on general disaster readiness information with an emphasis on being prepared - and having a plan ready - to face any emergency.Released in April, the production of “People Like You” was the brainchild of two Rotary Ojai-West Club members, filmmakers Dulanie Ellis and Ray Singer of Walk Your Talk Productions, who taped the entire 20 hours of training conducted by Lazenby. The “People Like You” DVD condenses the 20-hour, seven-week CERT course into a 77-minute film that demonstrates ways to prepare for numerous emergencies or disasters.
In easy-viewing chapters, “People Like You” covers emergency supplies, search and rescue, medical triage and treatment, preparing for hurricanes, fire, earthquakes, pandemics, hazardous materials incidents, travel safety and disaster psychology. “In a major disaster, the cavalry just isn’t coming,” notes Lazenby in the DVD. “We have to learn how to take care of ourselves. CERT training helps people be part of the solution instead of part of the problem.”More than 500 Santa Paulans have received CERT training, the highest number of program graduates in Ventura County. CERT emphasizes giving residents the knowledge they need to be safer and help create order out of chaos, to bridge the gap until professional help arrives. The DVD of “People Like You” - which includes emergency supply checklists for the home and car on the inside covers - is available for sale to the public.
