Norma Henderson, preparing for a move to Oklahoma, has lived in Ventura County for over 61 years. During this time she has volunteered for numerous organizations and service clubs. One of her first experiences was with Ventura County’s Health Department, working with the Child Health and Disability Prevention Program and the Women, Infants and Children’s program. As a volunteer with the Health Department, she was able to bring services to families in Piru and Fillmore that otherwise may have been overlooked. While living in Piru Norma was active in the Piru Neighborhood Council, serving three years as its president. Along with promoting children’s activities as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader, she was involved with the Piru Senior Citizens Club for over 20 years. She planned its activities and served as its president, secretary and treasurer at different times throughout the years.Norma has also volunteered for the Senior Nutrition Action Council of Ventura County for many years. She served as president for three years, and vice president for two years.
After the death of her husband Bob, Norma joined the Piru Lioness Club and became secretary and later president. When the Lions Club began allowing women, Norma was invited to join the Santa Paula Lions Club. After serving a year as secretary, she became its first Lady President, holding the office for three years, and later served as vice president.Norma has always liked helping people, working with the senior citizens and all members of the community. She is still involved with Lions, is a director on the Santa Paula Commission on Aging Board, and volunteers at the Santa Paula Senior Center as their trip coordinator. Now retired from the Ventura County Senior Nutrition Program as an outreach coordinator, it is time for a new adventure. Norma will be leaving Santa Paula at the end of June to stretch her wings, but wants to assure everyone that she will be back for the Ninth Annual Valentine Trip in February 2009.
