By Susan Branham Santa Paula TimesIt was a glorious spring day, and hundreds of Santa Paula kids had a memory-making Saturday at the City of Santa Paula’s 23rd Annual Easter and Earth Day Celebration. A massive Easter Egg Hunt and Earth Day activities drew children ages one to thirteen to Glen City School where the green grass was blanketed with candy and plastic eggs. Excited children arrived with their baskets to scoop up the candy and enjoy carnival games, arts and crafts, and have their pictures taken with the Easter Bunny.Santa Paula Mayor Bob Gonzales welcomed everyone to the celebration. “ I want to welcome all of you, children and parents, to this event,” he said. “I hope you have a good time.” Recreation Supervisor Ed Mount told the crowd the fun things they had in store. “We have an Easter Egg Hunt for children one to six years old,” he said. “We have 10 special egg prizes.” The lucky children who found plastic eggs among the candy were awarded Easter Baskets filled with even more goodies!
Human-sized bunnies assisted with the festivities, and the crowd was entertained by the Santa Paula High School Band. Martial Arts, Mad Science and Cheerleading demonstrations were part of the fun, and a rock-climbing wall was available for scaling. Kids even had the opportunity to meet Santa Paula Canine Police Officer Jack, who seemed to be enjoying the attention. Both Santa Paula and Fillmore Fire Departments had displays at the event, as well as the Santa Paula Police Department. The Easter Egg Race had the added challenge of Southern California’s trademark Santa Ana winds, which threatened to blow the eggs from the spoons before kids could carry them across the finish line. Food booths were on site for those who worked up an appetite, and the artistic got the opportunity to make their own baskets! This special day was provided by the City of Santa Paula Community Services Department and Refuse Division.
