Ventura County Fair opens today

By Susan Branham Santa Paula TimesSummertime fun is just a few short miles away this week, at the 2007 Ventura County Fair. “An Old Fashioned Fair” is the place where happy memories, new and old, mingle with the aromas of funnel cakes and barbeque - a place where children laugh with joy on the Carnival rides and newborn lambs first greet the world. “An Old Fashioned Fair” is this year’s theme, and there seems to be something there for everyone to simply enjoy.Ventura County Fair ParadeWednesday, August 1, is opening day at the fairgrounds, and the Fair runs through Sunday, August 12. This year’s parade is on Saturday, August 4 at 10 a.m. and begins at Coronado Street. Ventura County’s Firefighters will be honored as the Grand Marshals. Firefighters representing every VC Fire Department will be waving to the crowds from the Ventura County Fire District’s big red 1939 Mack Truck fire engine.Barbara Boester-Quaid, Ventura County Fairgrounds CEO, is very pleased to have the firefighters as Grand Marshals. “We are delighted that these brave men and women have agreed to honor us by leading the Fair Parade, the annual herald of the Ventura County Fair,” she said.Events and displaysParading around the fairgrounds (after parading in the Parade), will be those perennial favorites, the Budweiser Clydesdale Team. Weighing in at over 2000 pounds each, and standing six feet at the shoulder, these “muscle horses” display true horsepower - effortlessly pulling their traditional red, white and gold wagon.The Clydesdale team will be based in Porker Flats, home to the All-Alaskan Pig Races and one of this year’s new events, The Wild West Turkey Stampede. The turkey races run from August 7 through August 12.Uncle Leo’s Barn is a favorite destination at the Fair every year. Three generations of the Vanoni family carry on this Fair tradition. Barnyard activities are scheduled for noon everyday, and Uncle Leo’s Kids’ Tractor Pull takes place every day at 3 p.m.The Home Arts building is a treasure trove of arts and crafts, preserved foods, quilts, clothing and textiles, baked goods and special exhibits. With the family table back in style, the place settings are the exhibit to find ideas for setting a welcoming family meal. Tuesday, August 7 features Blessing of the Marriages at 10:30 a.m. at the Pepsi Community Stage.Professional arts, amateur fine arts, hobbies, models and collections are all waiting to be discovered. A visit to the livestock exhibits is always an adventure, where 4-H and FFA members proudly display their animals. The Agriculture, Horticulture and Youth Buildings will feature displays by 4-H members. A Master Gardener from the Hansen Agricultural Center will also be on hand.Gem and minerals, photography, and floriculture displays await to interest everyone. The Fair - for the first time in its history - has a birthing center, where baby animals and chicks will make their first appearance.The Junior Livestock Auction begins Friday, August 10 at 9 a.m. at Clark Pavilion. Small Livestock Department events include poultry, rabbit and guinea pig showmanship and judging. The Professional Cowboy Rodeo takes place Saturday and Sunday, August 11 and 12 at 2 and 7 p.m. Motorsports with races and Demolition Derby are set for Wednesday and Thursday, August 1 and 2 at 6 p.m.Spenser Makenzie’s Fish Company, with its flat screen TVs, fish tacos and seared ahi tuna pockets and salads is a new addition the Fair’s food line-up this year.Music PerformancesMusic is a great part of the Fair, with big name performances. “Our concert series is one of the best opportunities for Ventura County to see big name entertainment at a great price, all of our entertainment is included with the price of Fair admission,” Boester-Quaid said. Tanya Tucker will entertain Friday, August 3 at 7:30 p.m., and REO Speedwagon is on stage Saturday August 4 at 7:30 p.m.Sunday, August 5 is Dia de la Familia with Los Horoscopos de Durango, Pablo Montero and Mariachis los Tapatios performing at 3 p.m. Hinder with Papa Roach are on stage on Monday, August 6 at 7:30 p.m. Tony Orlando will perform on Tuesday, August 7 at 1 p.m. The Beach Boys are entertaining on Tuesday, August 7 at 7:30 p.m., and Jo Dee Messina with Sawyer Brown will appear on Wednesday, August 8 at 7:30 p.m. The Bangles with The Motels will perform on Thursday, August 9 at 7:30 p.m., and Lifehouse appears Friday, August 10 at 7:30. Wristbands are sold for $25 from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. and they are good for unlimited Carnival rides until 7 p.m.Admission and ParkingAugust 3 is Youth Day at the Fair, where children 12 and under are admitted free. Seniors and persons with Disabilities Day, sponsored by Kaiser Permanente, is Tuesday, August 7, with seniors 62 and older and persons with disabilities admitted free. Military Appreciation Day, sponsored by Miller Beer, is Thursday, August 9, when military with valid, current ID are admitted free. Entry to the Fair is only $1 until 3 p.m. on Dollar Days, sponsored by Pepsi, on Wednesday, August 1 and Wednesday, August 8. Super Lotto Plus Day is on Thursday, August 9 from 11a.m. until 3 p.m. - free adult admission with a qualifying Super Lotto Plus ticket purchased for August 1, 4, or 8 drawings only.General admission prices are $8.00 for adults ages 13-61; $5.00 for children ages 6-12 and seniors ages 62 and older; children under 5, and super seniors ages 100 and older get in free.The Fair opens at 11 a.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. on weekends and Tuesday, August 7. Exhibit buildings close at 10 p.m. The Commercial Building closes at 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.Parking at the Fairgrounds is $5, but free shuttle rides are available from parking lots at the Ventura County Government Center, Ventura High School, the Pacific View Mall, San Buenaventura State Beach (parking there is $5 but shuttle is free), Schooner Drive and Harbor Blvd., and the Oxnard Performing Arts Center from 10:30 a.m. until 11 p.m. The Fairgrounds are located at 10 West Harbor Blvd. in Ventura.
