Granite Construction Company announced plans to build a new asphalt mixing facility on Mission Rock Road in Ventura County. Granite intends to submit an application to the County of Ventura within the next 90 days. Upon approval of the permit, the facility would be operational by mid-2008.Granite had previously worked in conjunction with A. J. Diani Construction on a proposed site in the City of Santa Paula, while continuing to look for other potential sites. The chosen site is well-situated in an existing industrial area of Ventura County where a similar facility operated for 30 years. The new site is also ideally located for delivery to local communities, is zoned for this use, and is away from populated areas.
In addition to providing a much-needed local source of asphalt, the facility will also result in a number of economic benefits, including the creation of approximately 130 jobs, increased tax revenue to the county and local schools, and lower road repair costs.A recent California State Department of Conservation study confirms Ventura County faces an increasing asphalt supply problem well into the next century, with today’s supply meeting only one-third of the demand for asphalt over the next 50 years.
