One of the little known projects of the Santa Clara Valley Hospice/Home Support Group is the cooperative effort with Blanchard Library to provide the community with books that help people cope in times of grief or crisis.Once a year, the Hospice/Home Support Group provides the Library with funds to purchase books relating to coping with illness, grief and other life altering events. Librarian Ilene Gavenman then selects for purchase a wide variety of books that are appropriate for all age groups, from small children to adults, and for all subject areas. This year, 24 books that offer help and coping skills for crisis situations were selected and purchased with Hospice funds. They deal with cancer and other catastrophic illnesses, depression, caregiver assistance, and other aspects of facing crises.
Just a few of the 24 new books now available in the Library are: “Cancer, How Will I Get Through This?”, “Coping with Chemotherapy” and “Listening to Depression: How Understanding Your Pain Can Heal Your Life”; for caregivers: “Walking Together Through Illness: 12 Steps for Caregivers and Care Receivers”, “The Comfort Home Stroke Edition” and “Companioning the Bereaved”; for children/young people: “On the Wings of a Butterfly”, “Talking With Children and Young People About Death and Dying” and “Healing Your Grieving Heart – for Teens”; and for Spanish speakers: “Tiempo de Duelo/A Time to Grieve”, “Yo Recuerdo: I Remember” and “Una Luz Que Se Apaga/On Children and Death”.All these books and those purchased in previous years are available to help when tragedy strikes. The library staff is trained to assist patrons in selecting books appropriate to their needs. One staff member said that being able to suggest these helpful books makes her feel not quite so helpless when she learns a patron is devastated by loss or is facing his/her own health crisis.
