Nelson received the City Tile from Mayor Ray Luna at the February 5 meeting.“As you know, Mike left city service to go on to greener pastures,” and the presentation of the City Tile is a way to recognize Nelson’s service and contributions, noted City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz.“I think it’s important for all of us right here to recognize the work you’ve done,” said Luna.“It’s been a pleasure working alongside you over the years,” and Councilman Bob Gonzales noted that now, as an elected official, he has a new appreciation of the museum. “The people behind the museum make it what it is today... you’ve done a great job,” Gonzales added. The museum is a “wonderful place and represents Santa Paula well,” said Councilman Ralph Fernandez. “We’re going to miss you, and the city was fortunate to have the opportunity to have you.”
A museum represents “an archiving of artifacts from the past... when you understand the past,” it brings meaning to the present and helps “plan for the future,” noted Councilman Dr. Gabino Aguirre. “You really opened up your arms to the children of Santa Paula,” whether elementary or high school students, the latter staging annual top-flight exhibits. “You showed the children not only the depth” of Santa Paula’s history and culture, but also a “lot of breadth.”Vice Mayor John Procter also noted the Nelson’s contributions to the museum.“When I first arrived in 1994, I thought the museum was the best place in the city and I still do treasure it,” said Nelson. “I thank all who made it possible for me to be there,” and offered support in expanding museum exhibits and programs.Nelson said that he did not do it alone: “The Councils, past and present city management, staff and volunteers contributed mightily,” as well as those who have offered financial support that have all played a role in the museum’s success. “It’s been a privilege to serve,” and Nelson said he would always remember the experience of being the administrator of the Santa Paula California Oil Museum.“Mike did a fantastic job,” even outside the museum, Agricultural Commissioner Earl McPhail noted later during public comment. “I’d see him with a megaphone leading tours” and pointing out the attractions of Santa Paula.
