By Susan Branham Santa Paula TimesA legacy of service and friendship lives on with the Santa Paula Chapter #671 of Women of the Moose. A recent fundraiser dinner sponsored by the chapter's Health Awareness Committee provided assistance with medical expenses for a cancer survivor. Anita Chaple, a Women of the Moose member of the Ventura Chapter #918 was presented with an assistance check at a recent meeting. "We had a great time raising the money," Rosanna Rodriguez, secretary-treasurer, said. "That's what we're here for, to help out."Recorder Marjorie Fernandez learned of Anita's situation, and that she needed a new wig. The Santa Paula women decided they wanted to help, and took it a step further, raising the money to help with healthcare expenses.Anita Chaple was grateful for the assistance. "When I joined the Women of Moose I didn't realize what wonderful things they did," she said. "I was shocked." Anita is described as a young woman of courage. The January meeting highlighted Health Awareness Month and featured guest speakers Catherine Lee from the River Valley Club Adult Day Program, and Sigrid Best Wong from the Home Support Group/ Hospice of Santa Clara Valley. Ms. Wong detailed the many services offered by Hospice, including medical transportation and home visitations. "We are always looking for volunteers," she said.
The River Valley Club is located at El Buen Pastor Church in Santa Paula and offers respite services. "We provide a hot meal at lunch, programs for discussion, exercises, and arts and crafts," Catherine Lee explained. The adult day program is open three days a week, Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The Women of the Moose thank all of those volunteers who worked so hard to make this a successful fundraiser and everyone who supported the fundraiser with their attendance and donations.
