On December 12, the Ventura County Board of Supervisors approved the Health Care Agency’s (HCA) addition of a mobile mammography service to the HCA mobile unit. Supervisor Kathy Long carried the project to the Board, along with support from the Ventura County Medical Resource Foundation’s contribution of $30,000. Supervisor Long will be working with the Santa Clara Valley Wellness Foundation to provide education and outreach for mammography services to residents in the valley. The Ventura County Medical Resource Foundation convened the Ventura County Cancer Task Force (VCCTF), comprised of over 35 professionals representing a variety of organizations countywide. Supervisor Long, chair of VCCTF, is working to implement the three-year strategic plan that identified solutions to support the County of Ventura’s ongoing commitment to improve breast cancer and cervical cancer services. The use of the mobile mammography screening service will make significant progress in overcoming the number of barriers that prevent women from having a regular mammogram. These barriers include transportation, inability to pay for tests, knowledge of where to go for tests, embarrassment, and language barriers.
