Santa Paula News
Local Rotarians attended the annual Rotary International Convention held in Chicago, Illinois, the birthplace of Rotary International. Rotary International was founded by Paul Harris, a Chicago lawyer, in 1905. The convention was a celebration of Rotary International’s first century of service. To commemorate Rotary’s first century, every local club was asked to place a letter describing their club’s service projects and plans for the future. The letter from Rotary Club of Santa Paula listed some of the many service projects the club has provided the community since it was first established in 1923. Some of the projects included in the letter were: Christmas Basket Program that has provided food and toys to over 400 families in the community for over 30 years; Ambassadorial Scholar Program by sponsoring five young adults through the years to the Rotary International Program; annually sponsoring youth and education programs including Career Day, literacy programs, college scholarships, and youth leadership activities including RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards); sponsored and built a home in cooperation with Habitat for Humanity; welcoming all new teachers to the community at an Annual New Teachers Banquet.During the Centennial Rotary Year 2004-2005, the Rotary Club of Santa Paula celebrated Rotary by being involved in eradication of polio and the completion of Rotary’s PolioPlus Program by members participating in national immunization days in polio-endemic countries; completing commitments to the Polio Eradication Fundraising campaign; and participating in a PolioPlus Partners project. The hopes and dreams of the Rotary Club of Santa Paula has for the second century of service include continued service that is most beneficial to the community by assisting in the sponsorship of new Rotary Clubs and working together with other organizations that share Rotary ideals and goals; continued support of literacy and education programs in the community and abroad; and expanding the club’s involvement in projects that promote international understanding and peace.
