Sinaloa Middle School student Geobio Boo is the grand prize winner of the Ventura County Transportation Commission’s Annual Poster Contest, “Share the Drive in 2005!” The 8th grader’s entry earned him a laptop computer, scheduled to be awarded at the November 5 10 a.m. meeting of the Ventura County Transportation Commission (VCTC) in the City Council Chambers at Camarillo City Hall, and his poster will be featured on the cover of VCTC’s 2005 calendar and reproduced as the annual poster. All first, second and third place winning entries were slated to be on display at the meeting, including posters from three Santa Paula students. Taking second place honors were Olivelands’ 3rd grader Carolina Guitierrez Pena and Briggs’ 4th grader Selina Rico Garcia. Jennifer Guzman, a 3rd grader at Olivelands, earned a third place award for her entry.First place winning artwork will be featured in VCTC’s calendar, and the artists receive personal digital music players. Second place winners receive bicycles, and third place artists receive razor scooters.More than 2,000 entries were received from 85 schools. In addition to the 36 prize-winning entries, 225 students were to receive certificates of honorable mention.
The contest, an annual event for the past 11 years, was originally started to increase awareness of the benefits of ridesharing and keeping the air clean. “Over the years the message has come through in many imaginative ways,” said VCTC Executive Director Ginger Gherardi. “Aside from winning prizes and having their artwork published, the best benefit has been that the young artists are realizing that what is at stake is their future. By seeing these reminders on a monthly basis in the calendar and on the poster, everyone is constantly reminded of the importance to do their share to help clean up the environment by ridesharing.”Free calendars will be available mid-December. Those who want a calendar may place an order by contacting VCTC’s Dial-A-Route Center at 1(800) 438-1112, or by e-mail request through the website: www.goventura.org.
