Girls beat Fillmore on soccer field

Cards take both JV and varsity contests

For the first time in recent history both the Santa Paula JV and varsity girls’ soccer teams beat Fillmore in the same evening. To top it off, this was the first time it happened on the Fillmore field. The JV girls took their match 2-1 and the varsity won 5-0.In the JV game, the Lady Cards dominated play and set the tempo, but the Flashes scored first on a breakaway in the 15th minute of the first half. Lizzette Guzman equalized the score 10 minutes later on a perfectly placed shot from 20 yards out. The half ended with a 1-1 tie,Rene Sepulveda put in the game-winning shot in the 10th minute of the second half, finishing a pass from Guzman.Fillmore mounted counter attacks but could not find the net. Santa Paula goalkeeper Maria Prado saved the win when Fillmore found the near post on a direct kick. Prado parried the shot which then deflected off the side post and out of play. Solid mid-field play from team Captain Rosie Sandoval and defensive play by Nena Elizarraz thwarted the Flashes attack.The varsity match will go down in history. An inspired Fillmore squad came out with a pressure attack, forcing the Lady Cardinals on the defensive. The Cards survived and out-possessed the Flashes. The first strike came in the 23rd minute of the match when Raquel Gonzalez beat two defenders and executed a solid near post finish from eight yards out. In the 35th minute Gretta Strautman sent a pass to outside midfielder Faviola Munoz who hammered a near post got by the Fillmore goalkeeper. The score at the half was 2-0.
Five minutes into the second half; Joanna Gertz headed a corner kick by Strautman toward the far post. The Fillmore defense accidentally put the ball, into their own goal. Just two minutes later Gonzalez took a pass from Strautman and slammed it past the goalkeeper.In the 57th minute Gonzalez forced a pass through the Flashes defense, which was pounded into the net by Baez for the final goal of the match. Ramona Sanchez earned her second shutout of the season, registering four saves.Since 200 Santa Paula has won three games against Fillmore. The Flashes took two matches and the remaining three games ended in a tie.
