Santa Paula News
Residents of Fillmore, Santa Paula and unincorporated areas now have a location to dispose of their recyclable household hazardous materials. The Heritage Valley Connection Facility in Fillmore will hold a grand opening on November 12th and 13th from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Collection will take place on the second Friday/Saturday of each month and no appointment is needed. The facility is operated by the County of Ventura Solid Waste Management Department through a grant from the California Integrated Waste Management Board. The types of recyclable hazardous materials that will be accepted are antifreeze, automotive and household batteries, oil, oil filters, latex paint and fluorescent light tubes. No other materials will be collected at this site and waste may not be left unattended. The County’s plan for a facility to accept non-recyclable types of household hazardous materials in the West County has been delayed and temporary collection events are being developed for the spring. Residents are encouraged to use the new Heritage Valley facility to dispose of recyclable hazardous materials. When purchasing products, the public should keep in mind the high cost of disposal for hazardous materials. The average cost per participant at local hazardous waste collection events was between $60 and $100 last year. The cities and County currently must pay for these operations with public funds generated by trash hauling fees. By using less hazardous products, consumers can reduce disposal costs as well as protect the environment and the health of their families.
The Heritage Valley Recyclable Materials Collection Facility is located at the City of Fillmore Public Works Maintenance Yard. Take Highway 126 to Central Avenue, turn left onto Main Street directly past Fillmore City Hall, and follow the signs. For more information on household hazardous waste collection programs or oil recycling facilities in your area, please call the County Solid Waste Management Department at 654-2889 or the Environmental Hotline at 1-800-CLEANUP.
