The game of the year for Santa Paula Cardinal junior varsity was all theirs from the first interception by David Maldonado to the last touchdown by David Carrillo for a 40-13 victory over visiting Fillmore on Friday. Santa Paula's first possession was turned over to Fillmore on downs after six plays, but it was not meant to be the Flashes ball because on the first pass David Maldonado intercepted it on the 44-yard line. Five plays later David Carrillo ran the ball in from the five-yard line for the first touchdown of the game. A good kick by John Wadkowski gave Santa Paula a 7-0 lead. On the Cardinals next possession they were hindered by penalties for clipping and holding, but all was well when a 25-yard pass play from David Maldonado to Carlos Rico was followed with a five-yard quarterback sneak from the five with 37 seconds on the clock left Fillmore trailing 13-0.In the second quarter, Santa Paula scored in three plays with a 25-yard touchdown pass from David Maldonado to Rico. A failed two-point conversion run put the score at 19-0.Twenty seconds later and with 2:54 on the clock Fillmore's Ricky Lopez made a spectacular 85-yard kick-off return for their first score. A good kick by Diego Jaimes ended the half 19-7.Fillmore's Scott Meierhoff - a break, recovered midway through the third quarter a punt fumbled by Santa Paula for the Flashes. On their first play a penalty sent them back 15 yards then a fumble recovered by Santa Paula's Brandon Burboa ended Fillmore's opportunity to capitalize. More salt in the wound came when a punt fumble by Fillmore was thrown back into the end zone where Cardinal Victor Barrios recovered for a touchback. A two-point conversion pass from David Maldonado to Wadkowski was good for a 27-7 score. Two minutes into the fourth and Santa Paula's ball Carrillo put the ball across the line from the two on a hand off from David Maldonado. A conversion run failed. The Cardinal defense continued to pound Fillmore's offense. David Maldonado again intercepted a Fillmore pass on the 35. A 10-yard run back and five plays later Carrillo scampered into the end zone from the seven for a score. Add a good kick for 40-7.
Fillmore's rusher of the night, Lopez, made another sensational 90-yard kick off return. The Flashes went for the two-point conversion, but was stopped by Burboa. The win improves Santa Paula to a 5-1 record.ATTENTION: All Junior Varsity games for Santa Paula will now begin at 4 p.m. instead of 4:30, except hosting Malibu with a start time of 2 p.m. They have found that with a start time of 4:30 it does not give enough time for a varsity warm up time for a 7 p.m. game.
