Academic Achievement Award

Santa Paula News

Barbara Webster Elementary in the Santa Paula Unified School District received the 2013-14 Title 1 Academic Achievement Award this spring.  California State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson announced in May that Barbara Webster was one of only 106 schools statewide to achieve this award.  The Title 1 Academic Achievement Award is given to schools receiving Title 1 funds from the federal government.  The funds are to be used to assist schools in meeting the needs of socioeconomically challenged students.   Over 6,000 schools in California are Title 1 schools.

To receive this distinction, the Title 1 school must demonstrate that all students are making significant progress toward proficiency on California’s academic content standards.  Additionally the school’s socioeconomically disadvantaged students must have doubled the achievement targets set for them by the state of California for 2 consecutive years.  The students, parents and staff at Barbara Webster Elementary achieved these goals.  In fact, Barbara Webster was the only Title 1 school in all of Ventura County this year to achieve these goals and earn this award.

Mr. Torlakson stated, “I am proud of what these schools have accomplished under often challenging circumstances.  Their administrators and teachers are committed to giving their students every opportunity to gain the knowledge and skills that will help them in school and throughout their lives.”

Barbara Webster Elementary has improved student achievement as measured by the California Standardized Test every year for multiple years in a row.  The hard working and dedicated staff take great pride in their students’ achievements and have proudly accepted the award on behalf of the students and families of the Barbara Webster community.
