The Santa Paula Youth Basketball Coach of the Year award has gone to Leo Lazos.

The award is named after Charlie Castro.  Before his death many years ago, he was a volunteer who coached many children in youth basketball and T-Ball.  In his honor each year one coach is selected who displays the characteristics possessed by Castro.  Lazos began his coaching career in 1998 when his son was 5 years old and has continued to coach his two daughters.

This year he coached his daughter in the 8-10 year old league.  In addition, he was asked to coach the high school league team, even though he does not have a child on the team.  Quoting from the introduction of Lazos at the awards night it says, “There re many aspects to admire about the way he coaches the game.  He epitomizes what the Community Services Department looks for in a coach.  He understands the department’s philosophy of participation and provides a fun and safe environment.”
