Whether it be the ocean or the mountains, wide open spaces or an intimate café, Santa Paula celebrations or someone quietly reading a book under one of Thousand Oaks signature trees, anything is artistically possible with the Santa Paula Society of the Arts “Ventura County Scenes” exhibit.

And you can see for yourself what inspiration Ventura County offers at this special annual exhibit and sale opening this Sunday at the Santa Paula California Oil Museum.

The August 1 reception will be held from 1 - 3 p.m. at the museum located at 1001 E. Main St. Refreshments will be served.

Santa Paula Society of the Arts members have taken their artistic act on the road to find scenes that most appeal to them from throughout Ventura County and this exhibit promises to show works from the society’s roster of acclaimed artists.

The “Ventura County Scenes” exhibit will feature paintings in oil, acrylic, watercolor and pastels among other mediums including digital art, pen and inks and lithographs.

The Santa Paula Society of the Arts (SPSA) was founded in June 1968 by a group of local artists who wished to maintain their friendships in the future; to increase their understanding and to improve their work; to encourage artistic growth, interest and art appreciation in all phases of the arts; to offer scholarships and encouragement to talented students; and to encourage civic interest, cultural awareness and to increase development of the arts.

Now the SPSA is one of the most active in Southern California and each year sponsors the annual Santa Paula Art & Photography Show, established in 1937 and later adopted by the society. Each year the show, the oldest such pre-juried event in the state, draws more than 400 entries.

Santa Paula California Oil Museum is open Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is  $4 adults, $3 seniors, $1 students, 5 and under free.

Museum members are also admitted free.

The Santa Paula Society of the Arts Gallery/Gift Shop - located at the historic Depot, corner of 10th and East Santa Barbara streets - is open Saturday and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. and by appointment for tour groups.

The society also offers art instructions; call 525-1104 and leave a message for the schedule or any other society information. You can also visit www.thespsa.com
