Enough Santa Paulans went to the polls during the Nov. 7th Election to book the city’s turnout of eligible voters at a healthy 72.7 percent By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesEnough Santa Paulans went to the polls during the Nov. 7th Election to book the city’s turnout of eligible voters at a healthy 72.7 percent, according to Deputy City Clerk Josie Herrera.In addition, the 72.7 percent turnout includes 25.5 percent of absentee ballots, a sign that the trend of taking the time to cast a ballot from the comfort of home is getting stronger.Santa Paula’s election has been officially sanctioned after the count of approximately 180 provisional ballots.And although there was one tight race for City Council between second place winner Ray Luna and Al Guilin, Luna kept his lead, widening it to 84 votes when the counting was officially over.First place winner John Procter wound up with the rounded number of 3,500 votes for 29.3 percent of the total, with Luna placing second with 3,268 votes, 27.3 percent.Guilin’s third place was with 3,184 votes, 26.6 percent of the total. Jim Garfield, who was trying for his second City Council term, had 1,987 votes, 16.6 percent of the total.
There were 25 write ins, 0.2 percent of the vote.“I don’t know who they were for, I’d like to find out,” said Herrera with a laugh.There were 125 write in votes - 2.1 percent of the total - for City Clerk, an uncontested race with Steven Salas the only candidate who garnered 97.9 percent of the vote, 5,959 votes. Sandy Easley also didn’t face a challenger for City Treasurer and garnered 5,682 votes, 98.1 percent; 108 chose to write in a candidate, 1.9 percent.Measure I, the SOAR-type land use initiative that gave residents the right to approve development in Adams Canyon and a parcel targeted for industry-commerical just west of the city, passed with 4,035 votes, 54.5 percent. There were 3,368, 45.5 percent, who voted against the measure.Countywide, there was a 73.6 percent turnout from the 387,075 registered voters, with 285,038 voters going to the polls or mailing an absentee ballots.
