Santa Paula 12, Oak Park 3 By Pat UntiedtSanta Paula TimesAs each 2000 Cardinal football game comes and goes excitement builds as the Cardinal team puts another win under their belt in preparation for the upcoming Frontier League contest that begins the week after next with Malibu. In Thursday’s contest against Oak Park the Cardinals worked hard for every point in the 12-3 Cardinal win to improve their record to 3-0-1.Monte McNair put the ball between the crossbars for a 26-yard field goal for an early Oak Park lead 3-0.Some outstanding Cardinal defense continued to push the Eagles back to keep the Eagles from scoring again.Early in the second quarter Santa Paula took possession of the ball when Mark Rabago intercepted the ball on the 40. Six plays later, with 6:40 on the clock, Xavier Ramirez fumbled the ball at the one where Wadkowski recovered the fumble in the end zone for the only touchdown of the game. On Oak Park’s first play of their possession, Cardinal Matt Pedone picked the ball out of the air to run on the outside to the seven. Before the end of the half a Jacob Macias, 29-yard field goal with 3:36 on the clock left the Eagles trailing 9-3. Oak Park threatened at the end of the first when a 14-play drive ended at the Santa Paula 2, but a penalty and batted down passes ended their chance to score.Oak Park struggled to gain yardage against Santa Paula with the Cardinals shutting them down twice with only inches away from scoring.
Ramirez and Macias batted three consecutive pass attempts down. With 11 seconds of play remaining in the second quarter a 29-yard field goal attempt by Oak Park went wide to the left.Coming back after halftime the Cardinals continued their quest for another victory. Cardinal David Carrillo left Oak Park frustrated after he recovered a fumbled, followed by and interception by Ramirez with 16 seconds left in the third.Midway through the fourth quarter Santa Paula’s 15-play sequence resulted in a 32-yard field goal by Macias.Santa Paula will travel to Channel Islands at 7 p.m. on Friday.
