By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesA Santa Paula man was convicted by a Ventura County Superior Court jury on Tuesday of felony stalking a 12-year-old girl after being ordered to stay away, as well as well as related misdemeanor charges. David Allen Keefe, 58, was tried on charges of failure to obey a restraining order and annoyance of the now 16-year-old Santa Paula girl.Among the witnesses in the trial were two of Keefe’s female relatives, now in their 20s, who testified that Keefe had molested them when they were children in the 1980s.A resident of North Steckel Drive, Keefe was arrested by the Santa Paula Police Department in June 2006 on numerous charges, including the felony stalking of the girl he had been ordered to stay away from. Among other charges was that Keefe had been making sexually suggestive remarks about the girl to witnesses since she was about 11 years old. He had also made veiled threats to a witness, which caused the victim’s family to alter their lifestyle to protect the victim. One of the witnesses, an unidentified Santa Paula boy, told the jury last week that Keefe had approached him about taking pictures of the girl he had stalked. Senior Deputy District Attorney Maeve Fox told jurors that Keefe had an abnormal sexual interest in the child.
Among the allegations is that Keefe left a plastic Easter egg in the victim’s mailbox containing a crucifix, necklace and a note describing the girl as a pretty woman. The following November, Keefe allegedly sent a certified letter to the girl’s parents that was filled with lewd sexual descriptions of their daughter, then 12 years old.According to court documents, the family of the girl got a permanent restraining order against Keefe in December 2004 after he made a comment to woman about an unsolved homicide and said that the girl also might end up dead in a ditch. After his June 2005 arrest, the SPPD opened an additional investigation into comments Keefe allegedly made to a witness.Residents of the Steckel Drive neighborhood where Keefe lived were well aware of the situation with the young girl that Keefe told residents that he wanted to marry. “Basically, everyone on the block was very concerned about him,” said one resident, who asked not to be identified.Keefe’s attorney Joe Lax said that Keefe did not touch the girl, threaten her or have any contact with her.Keefe could be sentenced for up to four years in prison when he reappears in court on December 4, although he might be ordered to undergo a mental health assessment. Keefe will also have to register as a sex offender.
