The Santa Paula Union High School Alumni Association is holding its annual dinner on Saturday, September 29 at the Courtyard by Marriott in Oxnard.

The Santa Paula Union High School Alumni Association is holding its annual dinner on Saturday, September 29 at the Courtyard by Marriott in Oxnard. Cocktails are at 6 p.m., and dinner will be served at 7 p.m. Background music for the evening will be furnished by Gil Rosas.Price is $40 per person. All members of the Association have been invited, and all classmates of the classes ending in the years “2” and “7” have also been invited.This year, the Association is honoring Dr. Charles Hair, Class of 1937, and retired SPUHS teacher Jean Dempsey.Charles moved to Santa Paula with his family when he was 8 years old. He attended grade school in Santa Paula, and graduated from Santa Paula High with the Class of 1937. He was on the Varsity track and football teams, and played the trumpet in the school band.Following graduation Charles went to Ventura Junior College and then to USC, where he received his Bachelor of Science in 1942 and his medical doctorate in 1944. He then became a captain with the U.S. Army as a medical officer, serving his country in the 62nd Field Hospital in Salzburg, Austria.Following his discharge from the Army, Charles served as chief of staff at St. John’s Hospital in Oxnard, and chair of the OB-GYN department. His community involvement includes, among other things, serving as president of the Ventura County Medical Society and the California Medical Association, chairman of the American Medical Association Council on Legislation, and member of the Board of California Chamber of Commerce, the Saticoy Elementary School, Ventura County United Way, California State Board of Consumer Affairs, and Audio Digest Foundation.
Through his service as Board chairman of Blue Shield of California, Dr. Hair helped develop and lead Blue Shield into a cost containment program, making it one of the first major health insurance companies to adopt such a plan. For this contribution, he received the honor of Chairman Emeritus.He and Ben Nordman founded the Livingston Memorial Foundation, a foundation established to enhance local patient care available to those who otherwise could not afford it. He still services as president and chair of the Foundation’s Board of Directors. The foundation formed the Livingston Memorial Visiting Nurse Association for a not-for-profit home health and hospice agency, which he serves as president.Among his many distinguished honors are an appointment to the California State Board of Consumer Affairs by Governor Ronald Reagan, a U.S. Congressional tribute, a commendation from the Ventura County Board of Supervisors, serving as grand marshal of the Ventura County Fair, a Physician of the Year award, Physician Emeritus award from the Ventura County Medical Resource Foundation, and many, many others.Charles married Geraldine York of Ventura in 1942, and they are the parents of five children, and have six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He enjoys golf, travel, ranching and western horsemanship, and has ridden with Los Rancheros Vistadores since 1971.The Alumni Association is looking forward to honoring our outstanding alumnus Charles Hair for his dedication to the medical profession and his service to his community.
