Santa Paula Police Department
By Peggy Kelly Santa Paula TimesA tip offered by a concerned citizen led to the arrest of a Santa Paula man suspected of being armed with a semiautomatic handgun who was wanted on several outstanding warrants, according to a SPPD spokesman. On Thursday, August 9 just after noon the SPPD was notified that David Castro, 22, was at a residence located in the 700 block of Yale Street according to SPPD Lt. Mike Saviers, who said that Castro was at a residence other than his own.As SPPD Officers arrived at the location Castro was found to be inside the residence but when ordered to surrender he refused. After several unsuccessful attempts to get Castro to surrender, SPPD K-9 Rex was sent by his partner Senior Officer Ryan Smith to apprehend him but Castro battered the dog by “kicking him,” said Lt. Saviers.Officers were able to arrest Castro and he was found to have a .22 caliber handgun and drug paraphernalia in his possession.Castro received minor injuries during the incident and was treated at Santa Paula Hospital before he was transported to Ventura County Jail.
Castro was booked for resisting, obstructing or delaying a peace officer, battery of a police K-9, being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm and a convicted felon in possession of ammunition.Bail for Castro was set at $90,000 pending a court appearance.K-9 Rex was not injured during the incident and Lt. Saviers said that Castro was not charged with battery upon an officer.“This case is another great example of what occurs when citizens work together with police to enhance the quality of life within the city,” by reporting criminal activity said Senior Officer Smith. If you have information you would like to share with the SPPD call 525-4474 or the anonymous Crime Stoppers tip line at 524-0907 where information offered might lead to a reward.
