By Susan Branham Santa Paula TimesLaura Romero didn’t have to go far to get her Valentine greetings this year, but she would need to look far back into history to find the origins of today’s holiday. Valentine traditions have varied over the centuries. One custom in ancient Rome initiated a lottery system, where Valentines were selected at random, and after a year the couples often married. Thankfully, that custom was soon abandoned, and today, cards, flowers and candy are the popular methods for selecting a Valentine. Today’s Valentine card selections include sentiments for just about everyone you love, from grandmother to godson to even the family pet.Laura Romero found her Valentines cards at Santa Paula’s Fiesta Hallmark. “It’s Valentines Central,” she smiled. And she loves Valentine’s Day. “It’s one of my favorite holidays,” she said. “You get to show how you feel about your family and friends.” Laura selected cards for her parents, Rick and Irma. “They do a lot for me, and I love my parents,” Laura said. “They help a lot with my daughter, Janese.Laura’s daughter Janese will soon be three years old. “I bought one for Janese,” she said. “She’s the apple of my eye. I couldn’t ask for anyone else to be a better Valentine.”“I also bought a card for my best friend, Carmen,” said Laura. “She’s like a sister to me. I never had a sister, and she comes pretty darn close to it.”
Laura knows about Valentines because she’s an employee of Fiesta Hallmark. “I’ve worked here almost five years,” she said. “I began looking for my Valentines the first of February. It took awhile but I got the best of the bunch because I got there early. It’s a fun and festive place to be. It gets you in the holiday mood.”Valentine’s Day. For everyone you love.
