This year’s “Holiday Challenge” FOOD Share Ventura County’s Food Bank’s annual countywide food & fund drive ends December 24, 2006. Hunger reaches virtually all communities across the United States, which does not exclude those close to home, here in Ventura County. Clients seeking emergency food assistance today are not the stereotypical profile either. They are children, seniors, individuals in ill health, the working poor and the homeless. For whatever the myriad of reasons individuals are seeking food assistance, FOOD Share, Ventura County’s food bank is there to meet the growing need.For the “Holiday Challenge” FOOD Share is inviting businesses, schools, service clubs, churches and others to sponsor their own local food drive to collect much needed food and assistance to create a hunger-free Ventura County. The goal is to collect 170,000 pounds of food to feed over 100,000 hungry people countywide.Those interested (businesses, clubs, companies etc) in sponsoring local food-drives should contact Susie Burmester, Food Procurement Coordinator at FOOD Share (805) 983-7100 ext. 143. FOOD Share will provide food collection containers for their use.One in five children in our local neighborhoods lives below the poverty line. Over 2,000 impoverished seniors would not make it without the supplemental groceries that FOOD Share furnishes 52 weeks a year at no charge.
