By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesRepresents of Soroptimist International of Santa Paula brought attention to two issues that affect many Americans - breast cancer and domestic violence - when they appeared at the Oct. 2 meeting of the City Council.SISP President Donna Stewart - accompanied by Directors Barbara Kroon and Hope Arellano - received a proclamation from Councilwoman Mary Ann Krause declaring October as “Breast Cancer Awareness Month” and November as “End Domestic Violence Month.”Councilwoman Mary Ann Krause noted that “I personally wore pink tonight,” the trademark color of the fight against breast cancer to show how important the issue is to her. “Fifteen years ago I found out that I had breast cancer and it has been fifteen years that I’ve been” free of cancer.Krause said that in 2004 more than 205,000 new cases of female breast cancer - and an estimated 2,000-plus new cases of male breast cancer -were diagnosed.“Mammography is recognized as the most effective method of detecting breast changes that may be cancer long before physical symptoms can be seen or felt,” noted Krause. And, she added, domestic violence is a “serious and violent social problem that exists in all economic segments of society, in all cultures, and in all countries of the world.”
The Soroptimist Workplace Campaign to End Domestic Violence and Breast Cancer Awareness are ongoing Soroptimist efforts to promote awareness, advocacy and action.“Soroptimists are in the position worldwide to educate everyone, especially women, about breast cancer as well as the right to feel safe and live free from violence,” noted Krause.Soroptimists in the Camino Real Region have launched the Color Me Pink and Purple, respectively representing breast cancer and domestic violence, to provide information and available services.“We are honored to be here and thankful to receive this on behalf of the Camino Real Region” and Soroptimist International of Santa Paula, said Stewart. “Santa Paula again becomes famous,” by aligning with Soroptimists worldwide on such issues.“Thank you...you are again a part of this historical event,” said Stewart who distributed shower hangers showing cancer self-examination methods for men and women.Stewart also brought “Safe Cards, national and local contact numbers” for victims of domestic violence.“I hope that all will be aware of both issues not just in October and November but all year long,” Stewart concluded.
