Fundraiser Dinner for Keshaun Mata

Santa Paula News
Published:  October 28, 2005

The St. Sebastian youth ministry program, along with family and friends of Keshaun Mata are planning a fundraiser dinner on Sunday, November 20 from 12 to 4 p.m. at St. Sebastian Hall, 229 N. Olive St., Santa Paula. Tickets are $6 each for BBQ beef, rice, beans, salad and roll.

Dinner tickets can be purchased by calling Chanda Stockton at 805-298-2075 or Michelle Kolbeck at 525-8039, at the Church Office, after mass, and at the door the day of the dinner. All proceeds will go toward helping the family with the incurring costs of traveling weekly to Children’s Hospital, medication, and other medical costs not covered by insurance.

Keshaun is a 6-year-old first grader at Thelma B. Bedell School. He has been diagnosed with malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor, intermediate grade, in his foot.

In September, doctors from UCLA recommended that Keshaun undergo surgery to have an amputation done from below the knee. However, with a second opinion from Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, the doctors agreed that an amputation could be done at the ankle. So on September 16, 2005, Keshaun underwent surgery at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles to have his right foot amputated.

The surgery was successful, and doctors are optimistic. Keshaun may need to have chemotherapy treatments done in the weeks or months to come. He will also be fitted for a prosthetic foot and will be undergoing physical therapy. It is with every confidence that Keshaun can return to leading a normal life and be an active participant in T-ball and recreation basketball for the City of Santa Paula.

Keshaun’s family includes his mother, Christina Mata; siblings, Clarissa and Dante; grandparents, Henry and Mary Mata of Fillmore; aunts and uncles, Henry and Jeanette Marin of El Rio, Pat and Chanda Stockton of Santa Paula, Joseph Mata of Fillmore, and Glenn and Kathy Schott of New York; and great grandparents, Richard and Vera Ruiz and Mary Mata of Santa Paula.
