So far the commission has only one eligible candidate for District 3 Board Alternate, Robert J. Willis of Port Hueneme.“Mr. Willis has provided services to the low-income community as a volunteer, assisting with the delivery of food and clothing to local organizations for four years and assisting with the Veterans Stand Down for one year,” said Riggin.Willis stated that he would like to serve on the Commission’s Board of Directors because of his desire to assist in getting information and aid to those who are in need and unaware of benefits available. His philosophy is that assistance given to low-income and homeless people can help them keep their pride and dignity with a hope that conditions will improve and that they are not abandoned. If elected, Willis would serve as District 3 Alternate to Socorro López-Hanson, who was elected to serve in June 2000, and is currently serving her second 3-year term.Riggin said that the commission would like to see more candidates and “since people in Santa Paula are very active,” at least one candidate should be willing to step forward for the Commission Alternate position.Ballots are available in Santa Paula at Services United on Main Street, the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clara Valley Harvard Boulevard Clubhouse, the Family Resource Center (Interface) on Main Street and Blanchard Community Library on North 8th Street.Ballots are also available at the Commission on Human Concerns, 621 Richmond Avenue, Oxnard, and can be obtained by calling Catalina Carbone at 436-4038.
