By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesAs Santa Paula continues to urge bilingual residents to work the polls on Election Day the County of Ventura is also planning to make up the shortfall by utilizing county employees on Nov. 2.Ventura County is under pressure from the U.S. Dept. of Justice to do more for Spanish speaking voters including more bilingual ballots and election materials as well as having more bilingual poll workers.Under a recent federal order at least 300 of the county’s 1,200 precinct workers must be bilingual and the county has found itself short by about 56 bilingual poll workers.
The County Board of Supervisors adopted a plan on Tuesday that would offer bilingual county workers a full day’s pay as well as up to $90 for poll duty. Employees would get the day off from their regular duties as leave with pay ensuring that the county would not have to shoulder overtime charges.County Clerk-Recorder Phil Schmidt reported that the lack of poll workers in general has reached a crisis. On Election Day precinct workers are expected to work from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m. or later doing everything from setting up the polls to helping voters who might have questions about the voting process.Being a poll worker is a paid position although no one does it for monetary reward: workers collect stipends from $65 to $85 a day, and $5 for undergoing the mandatory training session.Santa Paula picked up another polling place that had recently fallen by the wayside: at a recent meeting Deputy City Clerk Josie Herrera noted that First Christian Church, located at the corner of 9th St. and Railroad Avenue, will again be open to voters for the Nov. 2 election.
