Meyer Kaplan - Beloved brother, father, grandfather November 18, 1927-August 19, 2004.Meyer Kaplan, a lifelong resident of Santa Paula, died suddenly on August 19, 2004 at a family camp in Sequoia while vacationing with his two grandchildren.The eldest of two children, “Mike,” as he was known, was born in Los Angeles on November 18, 1927. His parents, Ely and Regina Kaplan, were residents of Santa Paula then.He attended Santa Paula schools and graduated from Santa Paula High School in 1945. He joined the Army and attended the University of Utah. He was stationed in Louisiana and Texas. He was honorably discharged from the Hospital Train Unit at Letterman General Hospital in San Francisco.After being discharged in 1946, he attended UCLA and the University of California at Berkeley. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from UCLA. He obtained a Public Accountants License. He then joined his father working at Kaplan’s Bootery at Main and Mill in Santa Paula. He became owner after his father’s death in 1958. After 40 years as a shoe retailer, he retired in 1990.As a young man, he was active in the 20-30 Club. Later, he was a vigorous member of the Santa Paula Kiwanis Club and served as president in 1958. As a member of the Chamber of Commerce since 1950, he worked on various committees. He had held various leadership positions in local Scouting. He served on the board of the Ventura County Cancer Society, and was also on the board and was treasurer of the Blanchard Library Endowment Fund. He was a member of the Ventura County Jewish Council (Temple Beth Torah) from its inception.After his retirement, he helped the Friends of the Library and enjoyed outings with the local Audubon groups. He traveled extensively in more than 60 countries and to all seven continents. He had toured in all 50 states. He took many courses with Elderhostel, and recently was told that he had attended more courses than anyone else in the world! He wrote travel articles for the Santa Paula Chronicle, the Santa Paula Times, and for International Travel News.He had three sons: Craig, who predeceased him; Dean Kaplan, his wife Mary and grandchildren Wesley and Alison who live in San Luis Obispo; and Paul Kaplan, who lives in Palm Springs. Besides his two sons, he leaves a brother, Jerry Kaplan and his family of Ojai.He was buried at the Santa Paula Cemetery. Rafael “Fitas” Arreguin, 42, of Santa Paula, passed away Sunday, August 29, 2004. Rafael “Fitas” was born in Michoacan, Mexico and came to live in Oxnard until 1992 when he married his wife. Fitas was employed by Superior Cooling for over 15 years. He cherished his daughters and enjoyed watching them play softball.He is preceded in death by his brothers, Robert Arreguin and Gabriel Arreguin.Fitas is survived by his wife, Geraldine Arreguin; son Robert Pacheco and his daughters Rebecca and Rachelle Arreguin; parents Antonio and Josefina Arreguin of Oxnard; his siblings, Terry Padilla (Rigo), Angie Raigoza (Jr.), Mary Escamilla (Jose), Yrma Arreguin, Antonio Arreguin, Jose Arreguin and Jesse Arreguin, all of Oxnard; and many nieces and nephews.Rosary was scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, September 2 at the Santa Clara Chapel in Oxnard. Mass of resurrection will be celebrated Friday, September 3 at 9:30 a.m. at the Santa Clara Chapel, with interment following at Santa Clara Cemetery in Oxnard.Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Garcia Mortuary, 629 S.
