Santa Paula police start community role model awards for students

The Santa Paula Police Officers Association (SPPOA) presented its first four Community Law Enforcement Role Model Awards on April 23 at Santa Paula High School. This prestigious award is sponsored by the Santa Paula Police Officers Association and was designed by the School Resource Officer Rich Randolph under the Character Counts criteria: Responsibility, Trustworthiness, Respect, Fairness and Caring.

This new project is a positive partnership with the City of Santa Paula’s elected officials, Santa Paula Union High School District, and the Police Officers Association. Nominations are from school staff, received by the security team at the high school and approved by the School Resource Officer (SRO). This is just one of the new programs being implemented by the SRO, and is the only one of its kind in Ventura County.

Santa Paula High School students Maria Hinojosa and Elmyra Banos both found a purse near the campus, which had personal belongings and money. They turned it in to school officials and it was returned to its rightful owner.

SPHS senior Luis Romero has continued to excel in all of his endeavors. He puts in countless hours in school, School Board, Cops N Jocks and student government and is dedicated to ASB, a turn-around from his freshman year.

Joshua Perzel continues to represent the Santa Paula High School community by being friendly and courteous to all school staff and students. He has been open-minded and makes an effort to help those who need help. He is also committed to the United States Marine Corps after graduating from high school.

The presentation was attended by Santa Paula City Council member John Procter, members of the Santa Paula Police Officers Association, SPUHS District officials and parents. Each student received a gold plaque with their name on it bearing the school district symbol and SPPOA name, personal congratulations from Chief Bob Gonzales, and a $5 credit at the cafeteria at Santa Paula High School.

Any questions or comments on these awards can be directed to School Resource Officer Rich Randolph at 525-4406 ext. 179.
