The Women of First United Methodist Church hosted hundreds of people who flocked to the group’s annual Bazaar and Soup Kitchen on held Saturday, where a few dollars went a long way for eager shoppers.

The annual Bazaar featured arts and crafts, baked and canned goods, fresh produce, Granny’s Attic, handmade Christmas decorations and wreaths, costume jewelry, clothing, collectibles and more.

Janice Rice and Helen Butler were helping shoppers at the table devoted to handmade kitchen towels, baby blankets, “burp” clothes and other such items.

“It’s always nice to see everybody,” said Butler.

Indeed it seemed that everybody was there, both shopping and browsing or eating the piping hot soup followed by a piece of pie with coffee.

“I’ve probably been at everyone of these,” since moving to Santa Paula in 1974, said Margaret Johnson. “This bazaar is the oldest in Santa Paula.”

Johnson said that “seeing all the people and looking over all the things,” for sale are her favorite Bazaar activities and she noted that “some of the ladies will start up again next week,” preparing for next year’s event.

United Methodist Women operate a hospital in California, which is on the receiving end of much of the proceeds from the annual Bazaar.

Granny’s Attic featured everything from glassware to a grumpy looking doll, hand mirrors to a toaster oven, all at rock bottom prices hard to resist for the eager shoppers.

Even shoppers need a break and the Soup Kitchen was kept busy: “Betty Spalding is in charge,” said Doris Bickett, who estimated that up to 50 gallons of soup had been prepared for the event. “It’s a lot of soup. . .a lot of people do so much for the Bazaar and have done so much more than I do.”

The table decorations reflected the holidays and the hand-painted decorated pots holding Christmas goodies were also for sale, ensuring that - as always - there was something for everyone at the Bazaar.
