By Peggy KellySanta Paula Times“Autumn Brook” was bubbling for Lilly Adamczyk, whose painting took the top “Best of Show” award at the 66th Annual Santa Paula Art & Photography Show.Winners were announced at the Feb. 15th reception for the Santa Paula Society of the Arts sponsored show, which drew over 300 art lovers and artists who enjoyed the harp music of Xavier Montes, refreshments and the array of prizes for the winning entries.“It’s a wonderful show,” said Santa Clara Valley Bank President Mike Hause, a show sponsor. Hause noted it was his first visit to the annual event and his surprise at the number of entries, over 300 from throughout the state.“The turnout seems to get better each year,” said show Chairman Gerald Zwers. When the SPSA took on the show it had languished to the point where it lost money; now entries provide over $5,000 in prizes and it has become the “premiere show in Ventura County.”Over 1,000 members of the public cast their ballots for their favorites, Zwers noted, and the Blanchard Community Library exhibit a favorite stop for student tours.
The show was founded in 1937 by river valley area artists including Douglas Shively - the Jury of Your Peers award carries his name - and the Botkes. “It’s probably one of the longest running shows in the state,” he added.Entries are judged by a panel of jurors, the public and by competition artists themselves. The $1,000 Best of Show, sponsored by Santa Paula Chevrolet, is compiled from the three sources.Teri Peterson of Camarillo shared 1st Place in the Douglas Shively-Jury of Your Peers award with her watercolor Iris Garden II and an honorable mention in the Judges Awards for Iris Garden V.“Am I excited? Yes, surprised, yes and no. . .when I was creating the painting I was real pleased with it and had high hopes. But I didn’t expect to received two acknowledgments,” said Peterson. “That was the icing. . .”“I was just glad to get in,” when her two works were accepted for the pre-juried show, said photographer Suzi Skutley.Winners of the 66TH Annual Santa Paula Art & Photography Show are: Peoples Choice-Pat Johnson Memorial: Oil & Acrylics, 1st Autumn Brook, Lilly Adamczyk; 2nd Story Telling, J.
